Topic: Review, Study, Prep

Overview of Today’s Lesson:

**Please note:  For steps one and two today, the images you will be viewing are copyrighted by either NASA and/or the Hubble Telescope operators.  However, they distribute the photos freely for educational purposes.   Since it is clear where the images are coming from, today, you do not need to explicitly site the images. ***

1.       Navigate to the website for the Solar Heliospheric Observatory: http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/

a.       This is the website for the world’s most advanced solar observatory

b.      Explore the site a little bit.

c.       Then navigate to the SOHO Movie Theater:   http://sohodata.nascom.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/soho_movie_theater

1.       Choose an image type (on the left) and a date range(on the right)

1.       Be careful not to select too WIDE of a range, or it will take a LONG time to load.

2.       View the movie produced.

3.       Enter your birthday of last year as both the start dates, leave the end date empty

4.       Select one of the images and save it.  You will upload it to EdLine later.

2.       Navigate to the website for the Hubble Telescope:  http://www.hubblesite.org/

a.       Explore this website a little bit.

b.      Then navigate to the gallery page:  http://www.hubblesite.org/gallery/album/

1.       Choose your favorite image from amongst those taken by the hubble telescope.

1.       Upload this image, along with the  image from part 1 to Homework Hand-in on EdLine Labeled:  Spaces Images: Solar Birthday and Hubble

3.       Please read the following announcement about the End of Year Cumulative Review Extra Credit Test (EoYCRECT for short!)

a.       We are now getting very close to the end of the year and you will have an Astronomy Unit Test, followed by the Year-End Cumulative Review Test.   Here is a bit of information about the cumulative review test:

1.       It will cover all material from the beginning of the year until the end of the Astronomy Unit

2.       All questions are multiple choice.

3.       Scoring is as follows:

1.       Students who score over 95% on the test will receive UP TO 3% added to their Trimester 3 grade.

2.       Students who score over 90% on the test will receive UP TO 2% added to their Trimester 3 grade.

3.       Students who score over 80% on the test will receive UP TO 1% added to their Trimester 3 grade.

4.       No effect will occur for students who score between 80% and 50% on the test.

5.       Students who score below 50% will have 1% deducted from their Trimester 3 grade.

6.       Extra credit earned from this test may not give a student more than 99% for a Trimester 3 grade.

1.       i.e.  if a student with a trimester 3 grade of 97% were to score about 95% on the Extra Credit Quiz, that student would only be eligible to earn a 99% on their trimester 3 grade, not 100%.

4.       You will not be reassigned textbooks to prepare for this extra-credit test.   It is the expectation that you have retained a moderate level of knowledge (in your brain!) from the past year worth of science class.   Additionally, if you wish to study, there are many additional resources which you may use (some are outlined below).

4.       Once you have completed thee above, you may use the rest of the period for the following:

a.       You may study for either the astronomy test or the end-of-year extra credit test by using one of the following sites:
